St Athanasius Greek Catholic Theological Institute is the higher education institution of the Hungarian Greek Catholic Church. It is maintained by the Metropolitan Church sui iuris of Hungary’s Byzantine-rite Catholics (the Greek Catholic Metropolitanate).  The Chancellor of the Institute is Archbishop-Metropolitan Fülöp Kocsis.

Through its programmes offered within the field of religious training, the institution performs the following educational activities:

               - training Byzantine-rite Catholic priests and cantors for Hungarian Greek Catholic communities in Hungary and in the neighbouring countries

               - training Byzantine- and Latin-rite catechists and theologians for Hungarian Greek Catholic communities in Hungary and in the neighbouring countries

               - organising in-service training programmes for priests, catechists, cantors and educators

               - conducting licentiate courses in Eastern Theology for priests and lay scholars as an aggregated institution of the Pontifical Oriental Institute (Pontificio Istituto Orientale)

The language of instruction is Hungarian on bachelor courses, and Hungarian and – to a lesser extent – Italian/English on licentiate courses. The institution does not run programmes entirely in a foreign language. For students from abroad, a high level of proficiency in Hungarian is a prerequisite.

The institution’s academic research groups primarily investigate questions pertinent to Eastern Theology, as well as the history and cultural heritage of the Greek Catholic Churches of Eastern and Central Europe.
