Péter Szabó: The Effect of the Persecution of Christians on Ecclesial Structure: Considerations about the Hierarchical Reorganisation of the Armenian Catholic Church and Its Current Arrangements The fate of the Oriental (‘pre-Chalcedonian’) Churches is in reality a millennial chain of adversities. The present paper focuses on the history of a particular church tradition – that of the Armenians – from a rather specific yet highly characteristic perspective: the history of the changes imposed on Armenian communities by their jurisdictional ecclesial structures. On the one hand, the study provides a review of the development of the Armenian Apostolic Church into four autonomous superior jurisdictional units, as well as of the troubled history of the Armenian Catholic Patriarchate. On the other hand, it describes the late19th- century eparchial network of the respective Churches, their destruction by genocide – subsequently ending in complete annihilation – as well as their later reorganisation, with special emphasis on the renewal of the Armenian Catholic hierarchical structure beginning in 1928. A particular contribution of the paper comes from the fact that it identifies a number of archival sources that might serve as starting points for further inquiries.
